Tree Trimming For Fire Prevention
Every year fire season seems to surprise us, but with the fires burning in southwestern Oregon since late July, it’s an unfortunate reminder to make sure that you trim your trees and clean up the landscaping around your yard to prevent a fire from spreading should it come your way.
If you are any distance from town or on any kind of rural property, you should trim your trees and create a “defensible space” around your home every spring. The defensible space around your house is a buffer between your home or any other building on your property and the trees, grass, shrubs, or any wildland area that surround it. This buffer is essential to improve your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire. The cleared space will slow or stop the spread of a fire and protect your home from direct flame or radiant heat that would make it catch fire. Creating a defensible space is also important in order to protect firefighters who may have to defend your home your home.
